Lucy Charles-Barclay Talks About How She Became the New Ironman World Champion

After narrowly missing out four times, Lucy Charles-Barclay shares her feelings about a dream come true and the experience of competing against an all-female field.

A brand-new, more aerodynamically optimized Factor Ostro VAM was recently unveiled at the Australian Nationals, ridden by Simon Clarke of Israel Premier-Tech. Clarke finished 7th at the Australian UCI National Championships while riding an updated Factor Ostro VAM. Images of the bike surfaced on social media through a Queensland-based Chain Waxing Service, revealing the bike's new design. These images were also shared on the Weight Weenies Forum, offering multiple views of the bike.

Factor appears to have focused on improving the frame's aerodynamics, achieving this by using a setback headset to narrow and sharpen the headtube's leading edge. While similar approaches have been seen in bikes like the Cannondale SystemSix and the Specialized Tarmac SL8, this is a first for Factor road bikes. Simon's bike boasts an integrated setup with cables and hoses routed through a one-piece bar and stem.

The new Ostro VAM features deeper fork legs, a common aerodynamic feature used to reduce drag, especially on time trial and track bikes. The seat tube is narrower and follows the rear wheel's curvature, aiming to minimize air disturbance at this crucial area. The top tube is also noticeably tapered, forming a smaller yet more pronounced interface with the seat tube.

While it's unclear if the new Ostro VAM incorporates the Twin Vane EVO down tube from the Factor ONE aero road bike, weight considerations suggest otherwise. Additionally, Simon's bike is fitted with new deep-section rims from Black Inc, indicating a focus on overall performance. Factor and Black Inc have been contacted for further details, and any updates will be included in this article.

In response to inquiries, Factor stated, "Testing is a crucial part of our development process, and racing provides the best testing ground for new products. We are continually working on new technologies and are currently testing new products with our racing teams."
