Former top jockey Robert "Choc" Thornton has revolutionized the horse racing industry with Equishox, a groundbreaking horseshoe that has achieved remarkable success on the track. Out of 28 horses that have worn Equishox shoes this season, there have been an impressive 12 wins and 23 places, showcasing the effectiveness of Thornton's innovative creation.
During his illustrious racing career, Thornton soared to the top of his profession, securing over 1,100 victories and triumphing in 16 races at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival, including the Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase, and Stayers' Hurdle. His expertise and dedication to the sport are evident in his meticulous approach to developing Equishox.
After retiring from racing in 2015, Thornton transitioned to managing Apple Tree Stud in Gloucestershire. Simultaneously, he embarked on a new venture by collaborating with farrier Aron Tyler to design Equishox, a horseshoe that prioritizes horse welfare.
Equishox boasts a unique tread pattern that enhances stability and is crafted from composite rubber with an aluminum core, offering superior shock-absorbing properties compared to traditional horseshoes. This innovative design not only improves performance on the track but also prioritizes the comfort and well-being of the horses wearing them.
Since the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) approved the shoe for use on the racecourse last year, the results have been impressive. Thornton remarked, "We have had 28 runners, 12 winners and 23 have been in the first four. Graeme McPherson and David Kilahena's stable have been using Equishox, and out of the five horses that have worn them, all five have emerged as winners. None of these horses were hand-picked."
Top trainers Alan King and Roger Varian have also embraced Equishox, which is approved for use in Ireland and jump racing in the US, with pending approval in France and Australia. Thornton emphasized the shoes' role in reducing concussion and vibration when a horse's foot strikes the ground, thereby minimizing soreness, jarring, and the risk of stress fractures or joint injuries.
