SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (KGO) - In the North Bay, a unique Super Bowl watch party is being organized for teens and young adults who want a safe environment to enjoy the big game without the presence of alcohol or drugs.
Sally Newson, the organizer, is busy preparing for the event at Karma Club, a free afterschool space for teens located inside the Northgate Mall in Terra Linda. She is excited about the activities planned for the party, including a hotdog stand and a cotton candy machine.
According to Newson, Karma Club provides young people with a sense of community, belonging, and purpose. The watch party on Sunday will offer attendees like Stephanie Medina a fun and calm place to watch the game, away from the potential pressures of alcohol and drugs.
Alcohol Justice, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing substance abuse, based in Marin, is co-hosting the event. David Thompson from Alcohol Justice believes that the watch party is an important opportunity to provide teens with an alternative to parties where alcohol may be present. He also highlights the concern over the alcohol industry's targeting of youth, citing videos created by teens to challenge the message of some Super Bowl beer ads.
Newson emphasizes the importance of showing teens that they can have a great time without the need for drugs or alcohol. She mentions that the party will also feature pizza and photo booths, adding to the excitement for attendees like Medina, who is looking forward to cheering on the Niners with her friends in a safe and supportive environment.
The atmosphere at Karma Club is expected to be lively and supportive, with attendees able to enjoy the game and the company of their friends without any of the negative influences often associated with Super Bowl parties.
"I think it's cool," says Medina, highlighting the appeal of the event's activities such as pizza and photo booths.
The watch party is not just about providing a safe space for teens; it also serves as a reminder of the importance of substance abuse prevention efforts in communities like Marin County. By offering young people an alternative way to enjoy the Super Bowl, organizers hope to promote healthy choices and positive behaviors among teens and young adults.
As the Super Bowl approaches, excitement is building at Karma Club. The event promises to be a memorable and enjoyable experience for all attendees, showcasing that it is possible to have a great time without the need for alcohol or drugs.
